Show/Hide Field Codes in Word and Convert Fields to Text. If you have a lot of field codes in your Word document that you are not going to be updating, you may want to convert them to plain text. The rest of the steps are the same for all versions of Word. On the Word Options dialog box, click Advanced in the list on the left. Click the second text box, which you linked to the text box on page one. Click the Create Text Box Link tool. Move the pointer to the third vertical text box on page two. Printing hidden text in Word requires heading into the options section of the Print dialog. When you go to File and then Print, click on Page Setup at the bottom. In the Page Setup dialog, click on the Paper tab and then click on Print Options.
Text-filled shapes act much like a text box in Word, allowing you to perform all of the basic formatting functions with the interior text, such as font and size changes, bolding and italicizing. Word also includes a number of formatting features specific to text inside a shape that help you ensure a good fit and a nice look. You can align all the text in a text box with the top, middle, or bottom of the text box. Click the outer edge of the text box to select it. Click the Format tab (the purple contextual tab that appears next to the Home tab), and then under Text Box, click Change text alignment within the text box.

When a form text field is inserted in a Word document, the grey shaded length is about 5 characters long. How can this length be increased?

Within the 'properties' window (after right-clicking on the field), there is a default text option. If you insert spaces there, the size of the field shown will grow to compensate. The more you need to grow the field visibly, the more spaces should be added to the default text field.

The grey shading is just to indicate there is a form field there. By default the field will hold unlimited text, unless you change the field properties to only be a certain length. Still, the shading will only show a few spaces until you type, then the shading grows as you continue type.
As far as I know, there is no way to extend the shading when there is no text in the field. If the field is in a table, you could shade the entire cell.

If you have at least one Asian language pack installed you can 'stretch' the form field by using Distributed text alignment. From there you can choose the width and if you set this to a higher value it will expand the form field as well.

I converted the area for a response to a question from text to table. Then, added a box around the selected area. Visually, it now appears as a larger text box, even though the fillable area is only 5-10 characters in length.
